Rachel Nichols Biography
Rachel Nichols is an Emmy Award-winning sports journalist and television host whose career spans more than three decades across major platforms in sports media. Nichols is known for her extensive coverage of the National Basketball Association, as well as reporting on the National Football League, National Hockey League, Major League Baseball, professional tennis, college sports, and the Olympics.
Nichols began her career in print journalism as a sportswriter for the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel before joining The Washington Post, where she covered professional tennis, the Olympics, the NBA, and MLB. She reported on athletes such as Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, and Venus and Serena Williams early in their careers. Transitioning to broadcasting with ESPN, Nichols appeared on "SportsCenter," "Sunday NFL Countdown," and "Monday Night Countdown," and served as a sideline reporter for "Monday Night Football" and NBA broadcasts. She was also among the correspondents to launch ESPN's newsmagazine series "E:60."
At CNN and Turner Sports, Nichols anchored and reported for "Unguarded with Rachel Nichols," conducting long-form interviews with major sports personalities and addressing sensitive subjects such as domestic violence in sports. She later created and hosted ESPN's first daily NBA show, "The Jump," leading it from ESPN2 to flagship status, including its run as ABC's official pregame show. During her tenure, Nichols conducted interviews with figures such as Meek Mill and Philadelphia 76ers co-owner Michael Rubin on criminal justice reform, Mark Cuban following an NBA investigation into workplace harassment, and Kobe Bryant.
Nichols is a television analyst and host at Fox Sports, appearing across the network's broadcast and digital platforms. She also co-hosts "Open Floor," Sports Illustrated's weekly NBA podcast, and created and hosts two interview series: "Hometown with Rachel Nichols" on Monumental Sports Network, a multiple-Emmy-winning show about athletes and entertainers with ties to the Washington, D.C. area, and "Open Run" from All The Smoke Productions, a short-form series filmed on location at major events, including the Paris Olympics.
