Olivia Fierro is an EMMY and Murrow Award winning television journalist who became a regular at the breakfast table of hundreds of thousands of TV viewers as the host of Good Morning Arizona and the anchor of of Fox5 News Las Vegas. Was this career a family business? No. Did she know people in the industry? Nope. Were her parents well-connected or professionals who could help open doors? Definitely not.
Her parents spent their childhoods both in the United States and in Mexico, and never even considered higher education as an option for them. Her mother said she 'never knew Mexicans could go to college' and was even turned away from a career fair with an airline because she was Brown. In spite of careers selling shoes and processing loans and never earning more than $50,000 per year collectively, her parents raised three college graduates and succeeded in sending their kids through doors they never knew existed.
In Latino communities and other groups who are working class, it is easy to think the generation to come will live the same sort of life as the generation who came before them. But it doesn't have to be this way.
