Marlen Esparza, a professional boxer, has a storied career punctuated by numerous titles and championships. Esparza's prowess was first internationally recognized when she earned a bronze medal at the 2006 Women's World Boxing Championship. Subsequent years saw her winning gold at the 2014 AIBA Women's World Boxing Championships and bronze at the 2016 AIBA Women's World Boxing Championships. In 2012, Esparza made history as the first American female boxer to qualify for the Olympics, and further distinguished herself by winning a bronze medal in the women's flyweight division at the London Olympics.
Esparza's professional career officially began with her signing a contract with Golden Boy Promotions in December 2016, and she made her professional debut on ESPN's March 23, 2017. Her ascension to world recognition was quick and striking, with her winning her first professional world title by defeating WBC flyweight champion Ibeth Zamora Silva via unanimous decision on June 19, 2021. Esparza continued to challenge and overcome world champions, becoming a unified world champion by scoring a unanimous decision win over WBA title holder Naoko Fujioka on April 9, 2022, and adding the WBO female flyweight title to her collection after defeating Gabriela Celeste Alaniz on July 8, 2023.
Esparza's dedication and skill were recognized at a local level as well, with her being voted the Houston Fighter Of The Year for 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014 and winning the inaugural Houston Female Fighter of the Year in 2022.
