Naomi Novik Biography
Naomi Novik is a New York Times bestselling author known for her contributions to speculative fiction, including alternate histories, fairy-tale retellings, and dark academic fantasy. Novik studied English literature at Brown University and completed graduate work in computer science at Columbia University before working on the design and development of the computer game "Neverwinter Nights: Shadows of Undrentide." She later shifted her focus to writing, establishing herself in the fantasy fiction genre.
Novik's debut novel, "His Majesty's Dragon," launched the Temeraire series, which reimagines the Napoleonic Wars in a world where sentient dragons serve in military aerial corps. The series follows British naval captain William Laurence and his Celestial dragon companion Temeraire as they navigate battles, diplomatic missions, and the pursuit of dragon rights. The nine-book series concludes with "League of Dragons." The Temeraire series earned Novik the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer, the Compton Crook Award for Best First Novel, and the Locus Award for Best First Novel.
Novik's standalone novels, including "Uprooted" and "Spinning Silver," draw on folklore and classic fairy tales. "Uprooted" received the Nebula Award for Best Novel, the Locus Award for Best Fantasy Novel, the Mythopoeic Fantasy Award for Adult Literature, and recognition from the British Fantasy Society. "Spinning Silver" is inspired by the Rumpelstiltskin tale. Novik's work has been honored with awards such as the Alex, Audie, British Fantasy, Locus, Mythopoeic, and Nebula Awards.
Her Scholomance fantasy series, which includes "A Deadly Education," "The Last Graduate," and "The Golden Enclaves," centers on Galadriel Higgins and her experiences at a perilous magical boarding school. Universal Pictures acquired film rights to the Scholomance series, with "A Deadly Education" set for adaptation.
In addition to her fiction, Novik is an advocate for fan creativity. She co-founded Archive of Our Own and the Organization for Transformative Works, a nonprofit supporting fair use rights for fan creators. Novik's work has been translated into more than 30 languages, and she is recognized for her ability to blend historical imagination with character-driven storytelling in the fantasy genre.
