Nghi Vo Biography
Nghi Vo is a USA Today bestselling American author known for her contributions to contemporary fantasy fiction, including short stories, novellas, and novels. Vo's first published short story appeared in 2007, followed by a range of short fiction featured in Strange Horizons, Uncanny Magazine, PodCastle, Lightspeed, and Fireside. Her short story "Neither Witch nor Fairy" was recognized on the Tiptree Award Honor List.
Vo gained recognition with the publication of "The Empress of Salt and Fortune," the first entry in the Singing Hills Cycle series. The novella centers on a cleric who listens to stories about a recently deceased empress. The work received positive reviews from literary magazines and critics, earning the Hugo Award for Best Novella and the Crawford Award, and was a finalist for the Locus and Ignyte Awards. The Singing Hills Cycle includes several novellas, such as "When the Tiger Came Down the Mountain," "Into the Riverlands," "Mammoths at the Gates," "The Brides of High Hill," and "A Mouthful of Dust." Each installment features the wandering Cleric Chih and is designed to be read in any order.
In addition to the Singing Hills Cycle, Vo has written standalone novels. Her debut novel, "The Chosen and the Beautiful," is a fantasy retelling of The Great Gatsby, narrated by Jordan Baker, reimagined as a Vietnamese immigrant with magical abilities. The novel was nominated for the Locus Award for Best First Novel. Her second novel, "Siren Queen," is a historical fantasy set in a magical 1930s Los Angeles, following aspiring actor Luli Wei as she navigates Hollywood's challenges, including racism, sexism, queerphobia, and dark magic. Vo's third novel, "The City in Glass," spans several centuries and explores the relationship between a demon, an angel, and the fictional city of Azril. The novel was named one of the best speculative fiction novels by Publishers Weekly.
Vo's work has been nominated for the Nebula, Locus, and Lambda Literary Awards, as well as the LA Times and Ursula K. Le Guin Prizes. She has received the Crawford, Ignyte, Hugo, and World Fantasy Awards. Her short story "Stitched to Skin like Family Is," published in Uncanny Magazine, won the Hugo Award for Best Short Story. Another story, "Silk and Cotton and Linen and Blood," received the World Fantasy Award for Short Fiction. With a growing body of award-winning work, Vo is recognized for her contributions to fantasy literature, speculative fiction, and historical fantasy, noted for her lyrical prose and imaginative storytelling.
