M. T. Anderson Biography
- Anderson is an American author whose work includes picture books, middle-grade adventures, young adult novels, and nonfiction, establishing him as a versatile voice in children's literature. Anderson studied English literature at Harvard University and Cambridge University and earned an MFA in creative writing from Syracuse University. Before publishing his first book, he worked as an editorial assistant at Candlewick Press in Massachusetts, gaining insight into the publishing industry.
Anderson gained recognition with "Feed," a futuristic novel set in a world where internet connections are directly implanted into consumers' brains, leading to a decline in thought and language. The book won the Los Angeles Times Book Award and was a finalist for both the National Book Award and the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award. "Feed" is frequently discussed in the context of technology and consumer culture in young adult literature.
Anderson is also known for "The Astonishing Life of Octavian Nothing, Traitor to the Nation," a two-volume historical novel inspired by his interest in history and classical music. The books follow the story of a fictional slave in pre-Revolutionary War Boston, exploring themes of liberty and the experiences of African slaves during the American Revolution. The first volume earned the National Book Award, and both volumes received the Michael L. Printz Honor. The second volume, "The Kingdom on the Waves," appeared on the New York Times bestseller list.
In addition to fiction, Anderson has written nonfiction such as "Symphony for the City of the Dead: Dmitri Shostakovich and the Siege of Leningrad," which was longlisted for the National Book Award. He co-authored "The Assassination of Brangwain Spurge," a tragicomic spy story for young readers, with Eugene Yelchin; this work was also a National Book Award finalist. His novel "Elf Dog & Owl Head," illustrated by Junyi Wu, received a Newbery Honor.
Anderson's contributions to children's and young adult literature have been recognized with several awards, including the Margaret A. Edwards Award from the American Library Association. The award committee cited "Feed," "The Astonishing Life of Octavian Nothing, Traitor to the Nation, Volume I: The Pox Party," and "Volume II: The Kingdom on the Waves" as significant works in young adult literature. Anderson serves on the board of the National Children's Book and Literacy Alliance, a nonprofit organization that advocates for literacy, literature, and libraries. Throughout his career, Anderson has emphasized the importance of engaging young readers with challenging ideas and new perspectives.
