Suzanne Collins is an American author and screenwriter known for her significant contributions to young adult fiction and children's literature. Before establishing herself in publishing, Collins began her professional career writing for children's television, working on the staffs of several Nickelodeon shows, including the Emmy-nominated Clarissa Explains It All and The Mystery Files of Shelby Woo. She was also nominated for a Writers Guild of America Award for her work co-writing Santa, Baby!, an animated Christmas special.
Collins transitioned to prose fiction after a chance encounter with a fellow writer, making her mark in children's literature with the New York Times bestselling five-book series for middle-grade readers, "The Underland Chronicles," which received recognition in the United States and internationally.
Her career reached new heights with the publication of the dystopian trilogy "The Hunger Games." Inspired by flipping between war coverage and reality television, Collins developed the concept for "The Hunger Games," a series that explores the effects of war and violence on young people. The trilogy remained on the New York Times bestsellers list for more than 60 consecutive weeks, and publisher Scholastic reported over 50 million copies of "The Hunger Games" books in print by the time the first film adaptation was released. Collins contributed to the screenplay for the film adaptation, which achieved significant commercial success.
The trilogy's success led to a major film franchise and established Collins as a leading figure in contemporary literature. There are now more than 100 million copies of all five books in the series in print and digital formats worldwide, with foreign publishing rights sold in 55 languages. Lionsgate adapted each book into feature films, which collectively grossed more than $3.3 billion in theatrical ticket sales. Amazon recognized Collins as the best-selling author of all time for Kindle, noting her high percentage of popularly highlighted passages. She has received numerous honors, including being named to the TIME 100 list, Entertainment Weekly Entertainers of the Year, Fast Company's 100 Most Creative People in Business, and receiving the Authors Guild Award for Distinguished Service to the Literary Community. Collins has also been honored as a candidate for the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award.
