Michelle Li Biography
Michelle Li is a broadcast journalist and news anchor with more than 20 years of experience in journalism. As a reporter for KSDK Channel 5, Li has earned multiple Peabody and Edward R. Murrow awards for her journalism. Her work as a broadcaster has been recognized with four national Murrow Awards, including one for writing, and more than a dozen regional Emmy Awards. She is also a duPont finalist.
Previously, Li served as a news anchor for NBC-affiliate KING-TV in Seattle, where she co-created and hosted the daily interactive news show "Take 5." She has also worked as the primary evening anchor for stations in Wisconsin, the Coastal Carolinas, and Southwest Missouri. The Radio Television Digital News Association of the Carolinas named Li its inaugural Anchor of the Year for both South and North Carolina. Throughout her career, Li has led innovation and audience engagement projects in newsrooms, with her work in social media, innovation, and interactivity highlighted by organizations such as Google, Poynter, Facebook, and RTDNA.
Li gained national attention after sharing a racist voicemail she received, which led to appearances on "The Ellen Show" and the launch of The Very Asian Foundation with journalist Gia Vang. The foundation, supported by a monetary gift from Ellen DeGeneres, focuses on advocacy and celebration of Asian life and identity. The viral hashtag #veryasian, started by Li, has become a movement promoting unity and combating racism. The foundation has grown into a nationally recognized platform for celebrating Asian identity and addressing issues of racism.
As a Korean American adoptee, Li has supported adoptees through heritage camps and volunteer tours to Korea. She launched a program to support Missouri children in foster care, which led to a congressional award, and created a television program in Missouri to help foster children find permanent solutions. Li has spoken at the National Press Club on international adoption awareness and received a Murrow Award for her podcast "Monetary Li Speaking."
