Michelle Lee is a journalist, beauty industry expert, and creative executive whose career has included roles at major media brands. Lee began her magazine career as an intern at Glamour and later returned as a senior editor. She has written and edited for publications such as Mademoiselle, Paper, and Us Weekly. Lee contributed to the launch teams for "Us Weekly," "The Daily Front Row," and "CosmoGIRL," which received Adweek's Launch of the Year. She also served as editor in chief and chief marketing officer for "Nylon" and "Nylon Guys," overseeing editorial and branded content and launching Nylon Studio, the brand's in-house creative agency.
Lee is the former editor in chief of Allure, where she led the brand through a period of digital transformation and increased focus on diversity in beauty standards. Under her leadership, Allure was recognized for its commitment to inclusivity, including the decision to ban the term "anti-aging" and featuring a Muslim model in a hijab on the cover, a first for a major women's magazine in the United States. Lee advocated for Asian American representation, featuring figures such as Gemma Chan and Naomi Osaka, and produced a cover with three Asian models.
Lee was named Adweek's Editor of the Year, and Allure received Magazine of the Year honors for its influential covers and editorial direction. She led the relaunch of allure.com, introducing features such as the "Try It" and "Buy It" buttons to enhance digital engagement. Lee serves on the board at ColorComm and has received the ColorComm Circle Award, as well as recognition from Digiday's Glossy 50, Create & Cultivate's Creative 100, and Gold House A100.
Following her tenure at Allure, Lee became the first vice president of editorial and publishing at Netflix, where she managed a global team responsible for editorial strategy, social media, and content production. Her work included overseeing coverage during the rise of "Squid Game" and exploring the global impact of streaming content. Lee is a recipient of the Adcolor Legend Award.
Lee later founded Monologue, a consultancy for beauty and lifestyle brands, and serves as a fractional chief marketing officer and advisor for companies including Ulta Beauty, Musely, and Isamaya Beauty, as well as venture capital firms such as Provenance and Halogen Ventures.
