Linda P. Fried Biography
Dr. Linda P. Fried is an American geriatrician and epidemiologist whose research has significantly influenced the fields of aging, geriatric medicine, and public health. Fried is recognized for her work in defining frailty as a clinical syndrome, clarifying its causes, and exploring prevention strategies to optimize health for older adults. Prior to her research, frailty was an ambiguous term in medicine; Fried developed a biologically based theory regarding the clinical presentation, or phenotype, of frailty and proposed hypotheses about its origins in gene and physiological system dysregulation. Her publication validating this syndrome has been cited extensively in scientific literature.
Fried began her career at Johns Hopkins, where she served as director of geriatric medicine and was the founding director of the Johns Hopkins Center on Aging and Health. The center focuses on the epidemiology of aging, the relationship between aging and health, and interventions to improve health outcomes for older adults. Fried was the principal investigator for major longitudinal cohort studies, including the NIH-funded Cardiovascular Health Study and the Women's Health and Aging Studies I and II, as well as randomized controlled trials such as the Experience Corps Trial and the GEM trial of Gingko Biloba for cognitive decline prevention. Under her leadership, the Division of Geriatric Medicine and Gerontology at Johns Hopkins achieved national recognition, and research on aging became more integrated and interdisciplinary.
Fried became the first female dean of Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health, serving as DeLamar Professor of Epidemiology, professor of medicine at Columbia's College of Physicians and Surgeons, and senior vice president of Columbia University Medical Center. As dean, Fried led Columbia Public Health in developing innovative public health education, including a transformed MPH curriculum that set a new accreditation standard. She also established the nation's first program on climate and health and a multidisciplinary initiative providing economic evidence on the value of prevention. Fried has authored more than 500 scientific articles and chapters and has led research that defined frailty in aging as a medical syndrome.
Fried has also contributed to public health through community-based initiatives. She is the co-founder of Experience Corps, a senior volunteer program designed to improve academic outcomes for elementary school children while promoting the health of older adults. This program has been evaluated in a randomized controlled trial and operates in multiple U.S. cities. Fried has served as co-chair of the National Academy of Medicine report "Global Roadmap for Healthy Longevity" and has advocated for the societal benefits of investing in longer lives, including the concept of a "Third Demographic Dividend."
Fried's work has been recognized with numerous honors and awards, including the Stephen Smith Medal of the New York Academy of Medicine, the David Rall Medal of the National Academy of Medicine, the George M. Kober Medal of the Association of American Physicians, and the Nicholas Murray Butler Medal from Columbia University. She has been named a Chevalier de La Légion d'Honneur, a "Living Legend in Medicine" by the U.S. Congress, and was recognized by Thomson Reuters as among the top 1 percent of influential scientific minds. Fried is an elected member of the U.S. National Academy of Medicine and has served on its Executive Council.
