Karen Catlin Biography
Karen Catlin is a workplace influencer, speaker, author, and leadership coach recognized for her contributions to advancing inclusive workplaces. After a 25-year career building software products and serving as vice president of engineering at Macromedia and Adobe, Catlin observed a decline in the number of women in technology. In response, she established a women's employee resource group at Adobe to support women's career advancement in the tech industry.
Catlin launched the Twitter handle @betterallies to share practical steps for fostering workplace inclusion. She has authored four books: "Better Allies: Everyday Actions to Create Inclusive, Engaging Workplaces," "The Better Allies Approach to Hiring," "Belonging in Healthcare," and "The Better Allies Way: A Workbook for Being More Inclusive at Work." These publications provide strategies and examples for supporting underrepresented groups. Catlin also distributes a weekly "5 Ally Actions" newsletter to more than 40,000 subscribers.
As a public speaker, Catlin has presented at numerous conferences and corporate events. Her TEDx talk, "Women in Tech: The Missing Force," addresses gender diversity in technology and actionable solutions. She coauthored "Present! A Techie's Guide to Public Speaking" with Poornima Vijayashanker, and their LinkedIn Learning course is included in Toastmasters International's certificate program.
Catlin coaches women in leadership and advises organizations on allyship, with clients including Airbnb, DoorDash, Google, eBay, and Intuit. Catlin holds a bachelor of science in computer science from Brown University and serves on the board of directors for Digital NEST. She is an advisory board member for the Women's CLUB of Silicon Valley and WEST (Women Entering & Staying in Technology). As an alum of Brown University, she advises the university's Computer Science Diversity Initiative and mentors students on launching their careers.
