Julia Collins Biography
Julia Collins is a food technology entrepreneur and sustainability leader known for integrating culinary expertise with innovative technology. Collins holds a bachelor's degree from Harvard University and an MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business. She has raised more than $500 million in venture capital and has built companies across hospitality, consumer products, robotics, artificial intelligence, and climate technology sectors.
Collins began her career in the New York restaurant industry, contributing to the launch and growth of brands such as Mexicue, Murray's Cheese Bar, and Harlem Jazz Enterprises, which operates The Cecil and Minton's. As vice president and chief operating officer at Harlem Jazz Enterprises, Collins played a key role in The Cecil receiving recognition as Best New Restaurant of the Year.
Collins co-founded Zume Pizza, a Silicon Valley startup that utilized robotics and automation in pizza production. She became the first Black woman to co-found a unicorn company when Zume reached a valuation exceeding $1 billion. Zume Pizza secured a $375 million funding round led by SoftBank, marking a significant milestone in food technology and venture capital.
Following her tenure at Zume, Collins founded Planet FWD, a carbon management platform designed to help consumer brands assess and reduce their carbon footprint. Planet FWD has partnered with brands such as Clif Bar, Blue Apron, Kashi, and Numi Organic Tea, and also developed Moonshot Snacks, a line of carbon-neutral snacks emphasizing regenerative agriculture, local sourcing, and recycled packaging. After the sale of Moonshot Snacks to Patagonia Provisions, Collins continued to focus on advancing net zero food systems through Planet FWD, which serves as a leading sustainability and supply chain intelligence platform for global consumer brands.
Collins has been recognized by Newsweek as one of the "13 Tech Innovators Helping to Save the Planet" and by Forbes for her leadership at Planet FWD. She received the Global Food Change Maker prize from KM ZERO Food Innovation Hub for her work in reducing pollution in the food industry. Collins serves on the boards of the Climate Collaborative, FertilityIQ, the Town School for Boys, and Black Girls Code, and is a member of the advisory council for Launch with GS. She is also an angel investor supporting female entrepreneurs and BIPOC founders.
