Dan Schneider Biography
Dan Schneider is a retired Louisiana pharmacist and opioid crisis activist whose personal journey from grieving father to national advocate is chronicled in the Netflix docuseries "The Pharmacist." The series details Schneider's efforts to uncover the circumstances surrounding his son's death and his subsequent mission to address the overprescribing of opioids in his community. Schneider was among the first to identify and confront what has become known as America's opioid epidemic. As a pharmacist, he noticed an increasing number of customers presenting prescriptions for OxyContin, prompting him to investigate further.
The narrative begins with the death of Schneider's son, Danny Jr., who was fatally shot at age 22 while attempting to purchase crack in New Orleans' Lower Ninth Ward. Facing limited assistance from law enforcement and societal stigma, Schneider undertook his own investigation, engaging with community members and individuals in recovery to solve his son's murder. This pursuit of justice led him to recognize a broader crisis within his pharmacy, as he observed a surge in young adults between ages 18 and 25 seeking OxyContin prescriptions.
In his professional capacity, Schneider was one of the first pharmacists to take action against the opioid epidemic, working to shut down pill mill doctors and advocating for a prescription monitoring program in Louisiana. He collaborated with the FBI, the Drug Enforcement Administration and other authorities investigating a prolific pill mill doctor, resulting in the suspension of her license. Schneider has stated that systemic issues within the health care system, including greed and inadequate intervention, continue to drive high rates of opioid addiction.
Schneider is a keynote speaker at events such as the Rx Drug Abuse & Heroin Summit and the APhA Annual Meeting & Exposition, where he addresses opioid addiction, prescription drug abuse, and the role of pharmacists in combating the crisis. He has also worked with Miss America Camille Schrier to address the fentanyl crisis.
Schneider continues to advocate for solutions to the opioid and addiction crisis through his initiative, The Tunnel of Hope. He aims to build a nationwide movement, including a pharmacist-people's lobby, to influence state and federal policy on opioid-related issues. Schneider also focuses on expanding access to medically assisted treatment, adapting his advocacy to address the evolving dimensions of addiction in the United States.
