Jennifer R. Cohen, PhD Biography
Dr. Jennifer R. Cohen is a scientist and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) entrepreneur whose career bridges scientific research and social change. Cohen earned a doctorate in biochemistry, cellular and molecular biology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, following an associate degree from City College of San Francisco and a Bachelor of Science in biology from Howard University. Her scientific work includes malaria prevention in Ethiopia and breast cancer research, and she completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Johns Hopkins Brady Urological Research Institute, where her research focused on the non-classical roles of B-cell lymphoma 2 protein in prostatic disease.
Cohen transitioned her career to focus on equity in STEM, managing projects during an AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellowship at the National Science Foundation that aimed to increase diversity within the STEM ecosystem. She also served as STEM Education Advisor to Arizona State University and led SMASH, a STEM-intensive college preparatory and pipeline program for underrepresented high school students in Oakland.
Cohen has directed pipeline programs for underrepresented students for more than 12 years. She developed a graduate student support model for building community among underrepresented students, which continues to serve as a resource for recruitment and retention in higher education. Through her venture, Inclusive Synergy, Cohen works to create inclusive environments for students, staff, and faculty in higher education and the workforce, focusing on collaboration between administrators and students.
At UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business, Cohen designed and taught the elective course "Equitable and Inclusive Leadership," available to executive, evening and weekend, and full-time MBA students. The course presents data-driven benefits of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace and provides students with practical tools to implement DEI best practices. As a keynote speaker, Cohen draws on her experience as a woman of color in the STEM education pipeline and her scientific background to offer analytic, data-driven approaches to problem-solving. She has spoken for organizations including Genentech, Virginia State University, Northern California HBCU Alumni Associations Coalition, Beyond Academia, and the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation. Cohen's expertise positions her at the intersection of STEM, education, and equity.
