Gabriela Cámara Biography
Gabriela Cámara is a Mexican chef, restaurant owner, and author. Born in Chihuahua City, Cámara grew up in Tepoztlán. In 1998, Cámara opened Contramar in Mexico City, a restaurant specializing in seafood. She opened the restaurant Cala in San Francisco in 2015.
Through her visionary career, Gabriela has become one of Mexico’s leading culinary diplomats, both in spirit and in practice. Not only does she run two of the most iconic kitchens on the continent—Contramar in Mexico City and Cala in San Francisco — offering the very best of her cultural heritage, she is also a food policy adviser to the Mexican President, showing by example how food can have an impact far beyond the walls of a restaurant kitchen.
Aside from the cuisine, Cámara is known for her social advocacy. She has made it a practice to hire formerly incarcerated employees to staff Cala and she has been a longtime advocate of sustainability since opening Contramar.
Cámara embodies the role of the chef in the 21st century, leading from the front at her restaurants by putting social justice first and advocating for those whose voices are too often marginalized.
Cámara has twice been a James Beard Foundation award semifinalist, in 2017 and 2019. In 2019, Cámara, her two restaurants, and their staff members were the subject of a Netflix documentary, A Tale of Two Kitchens. She also has a Masterclass course in which she teaches viewers how to cook Mexican food.
Cámara was included in Time Magazine's Most Influential People in 2020.
