Fahmi Quadir Biography
Fahmi Quadir is a forensic investigator and short seller known for her work in corporate accountability within the finance industry. As the founder and chief investment officer of Safkhet Capital, Quadir leads a concentrated, short-only fund that focuses on identifying companies potentially engaged in criminality, fraud, and predatory business practices through investigative research. Safkhet Capital is named after the ancient Egyptian goddess of mathematics and accounting, reflecting Quadir's academic background. She holds degrees in mathematics and biology from Harvey Mudd College, and her analytical methods are rooted in her academic training, earning her the nickname the Assassin.
Quadir's entry into Wall Street was unconventional, as she did not have a formal finance background. She began her professional career at Deallus Consulting as an analyst, later advancing to senior associate. She then managed short investments at Krensavage Asset Management, where she played a key role in shorting Valeant Pharmaceuticals, anticipating the company's unsustainable price gouging and debt burden. This high-profile short positioned her as a notable figure in the investment community.
Quadir established Safkhet Capital at age 26, building the firm around exposing corporate wrongdoing. Her research process includes reviewing reports, interviewing insiders, and conducting undercover operations to gather evidence, sometimes reporting findings to regulators, media, or law enforcement. One significant case involved Wirecard, the German payments company. Quadir raised concerns about Wirecard's accounting practices before its collapse, and communicated with German regulator BaFin during the short-selling ban on the company.
Quadir has been recognized in the finance sector and beyond, including selection to the Forbes 30 Under 30 list in Finance. She appeared in the Netflix documentary "Dirty Money," which chronicled her role in the Valeant Pharmaceuticals case, and in "Skandal! Bringing Down Wirecard," highlighting her efforts in exposing financial fraud. She has spoken at Stanford Graduate School of Business, discussing her approach to short selling, which emphasizes intellectual rigor and financial accountability.
Quadir is a public advocate for the role of short selling in price discovery and market transparency. She has highlighted the limitations of traditional safeguards such as internal and external auditors in preventing fraud. As one of the few female short sellers leading her own fund, Quadir has faced industry skepticism and harassment, but continues to focus on rigorous research and principled conviction in holding corporations accountable within the financial markets.
