David M. Kennedy Biography
David M. Kennedy is a historian specializing in twentieth-century American history, with expertise in American studies, economic history, and cultural analysis. Kennedy holds the title of Donald J. McLachlan Professor of History Emeritus at Stanford University and serves as director of the Bill Lane Center for the American West. His interdisciplinary approach integrates history, literature, and economics, focusing on the evolution of American national character. Kennedy has taught at Stanford University for decades, contributing significantly to the institution’s academic community.
Kennedy’s published works have shaped the study of American history. His book "Birth Control in America: The Career of Margaret Sanger" examines the medical, legal, political, and religious aspects of birth control and is recognized for advancing the field of women's history. "Birth Control in America" received the John Gilmary Shea Prize and the Bancroft Prize. Kennedy was a Pulitzer Prize finalist for "World War I, Over Here: The First World War and American Society." His book "Freedom from Fear: The American People in Depression and War, 1929–1945" earned the Pulitzer Prize for History, the Francis Parkman Prize, the Ambassador's Prize, and the California Gold Medal for Literature. Kennedy is also co-author of the textbook "The American Pageant."
Kennedy has received multiple honors for his teaching and scholarship, including the Dean's Award for Distinguished Teaching, the Hoagland Prize for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching, the Stanford Alumni Association's Richard W. Lyman Award for faculty service, the Organization of American Historians' Distinguished Service Award, and the Wilbur Cross Medal from Yale University Graduate School. He has held visiting professorships at the University of Florence and Oxford University, where he served as Harmsworth Professor of American History.
Kennedy has contributed to academic leadership as chair of the Stanford History Department, director of Stanford's Program in International Relations, and associate dean of the School of Humanities and Sciences. He is an elected fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Philosophical Society, and has served on the Board of the Pulitzer Prizes, including as chair. Kennedy has lectured internationally on American history and is editor of the Oxford History of the United States series.
Kennedy has expanded his reach through documentary film, appearing in "American Creed" on PBS, produced with Condoleezza Rice. The film explores the concept of a unifying American creed through the experiences of citizen-activists. Kennedy and Rice continued their collaboration in the PBS documentary series "American Creed: Citizen Power," which highlights young leaders addressing challenges in their communities and the nation.
