Dr. Emily Silverman is a physician, writer, and creator of "The Nocturnists," a medical storytelling live show and podcast recognized for its role in humanizing healthcare. Silverman serves as a hospital medicine physician at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and as an assistant professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in history of art and architecture from Brown University and a Doctor of Medicine from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and completed her residency in internal medicine at UCSF. Her work focuses on the intersection of healthcare, storytelling, and social impact.
Silverman founded "The Nocturnists" during her medical residency in San Francisco. The project began as a small gathering of medical colleagues sharing stories and has since grown into a national platform, amplifying the voices of more than 450 clinicians through a podcast and live performances. The show features stories from live events, audio diaries from healthcare workers, and interviews with artists addressing medical themes. The Nocturnists' work has been featured on CBS This Morning and NPR's Morning Edition, and at Pop Up Magazine and South By Southwest.
One of the podcast's notable projects is "Shame in Medicine: The Lost Forest," a 10-part documentary podcast series produced in collaboration with the Shame and Medicine project at the University of Exeter. This series explores how shame manifests in medical culture, drawing on stories from more than 200 healthcare workers across the United States, the United Kingdom, and other regions. The project received a Gold Anthem Award for Community Engagement. Silverman also partnered with Dr. Ashley McMullen and Dr. Kimberly Manning to produce the audio diary series "Black Voices in Healthcare," which highlights stories of Black experiences in healthcare. The Nocturnists' "Stories from a Pandemic" documentary podcast series was acquired by the U.S. Library of Congress for historic preservation.
Silverman's writing has appeared in The New York Times, Virginia Quarterly Review, JAMA, CHEST, and McSweeneys, and has been supported by MacDowell. She was recognized as an honoree of the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts 100 List and named by Podcast Magazine as one of the top 40 Under 40 in Podcasting. The Nocturnists has received an Anthem Award, two Webby Award nominations, and was an Ambie Award finalist for Best Indie Podcast.
Through collecting and curating stories from healthcare workers, Silverman offers insight into the experiences of the American healthcare workforce. She has spoken at institutions including UCSF, Kaiser, Stanford, Columbia, Harvard, MindBodyGreen, and The Esalen Institute, addressing topics such as medical storytelling, healthcare delivery, medical culture, creativity, and change in medicine. Her personal experience with burnout and her efforts to build a community around storytelling position her as a voice for clinicians, healthcare leaders, and those interested in the future of medicine.
