Dr. Stephen A. Esper, MD, MBA, is a cardiothoracic anesthesiologist whose career reflects a combination of medical expertise, healthcare leadership, and engagement with the arts. Stephen Esper practices as a cardiothoracic anesthesiologist at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Presbyterian University Hospital, where he serves as associate professor of anesthesiology in the Cardiovascular and Thoracic Division of the UPMC Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine. Esper completed his medical education at University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and holds board certification in anesthesiology from the American Board of Anesthesiology, as well as certification in echocardiography from the National Board of Echocardiography. He completed a cardiothoracic anesthesiology fellowship at Duke University Medical Center.
Esper has held leadership roles at UPMC, including acting clinical director of the operating room, director of UPMC Enhanced Recovery Programs, and inaugural director of the UPMC Center for Perioperative Care, a program he founded. The Center for Perioperative Care focuses on holistic patient assessment before and after surgery, emphasizing patient values and shared decision making. Esper's research includes work on enhanced recovery protocols, perioperative echocardiography, and strategies to improve surgical outcomes. His studies have shown that enhanced recovery protocols can reduce mortality across multiple surgical specialties at academic and community hospitals.
Outside the operating room, Esper is active as a musician and sports broadcaster and journalist. As an Orthodox Christian, he serves as a Byzantine chanter and directs the choir at St. George Cathedral in Pittsburgh. He is knowledgeable in the hymnology of the Church and has delivered lectures on hymnology at the Sacred Music Institute, mentoring other chanters in the Orthodox community.
