John H. Noseworthy, M.D. Biography
John H. Noseworthy, M.D., is an American neurologist and healthcare executive. Noseworthy completed neurology training at Dalhousie University and the University of Western Ontario, followed by a research fellowship at Harvard Medical School. He completed residencies at Dalhousie and the University of Western Ontario, and neurology fellowships with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, Harvard Medical School, and Massachusetts General Hospital. Noseworthy joined Mayo Clinic as a board-certified neurologist specializing in multiple sclerosis and served as editor-in-chief of "Neurology," the official journal of the American Academy of Neurology.
Noseworthy has focused on multiple sclerosis and has spent more than two decades designing and conducting controlled clinical trials with support from the Medical Research Council of Canada, the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, and the National Institutes of Health. He has contributed to more than 150 peer-reviewed publications in neurology, clinical practice, leadership, and access to medical care. Noseworthy is the author of more than 150 research papers, chapters, editorials, and several books, including the three-volume textbook "Neurological Therapeutics: Principles and Practice." During his tenure as editor-in-chief of "Neurology," the journal transitioned to weekly publication.
At Mayo Clinic, Noseworthy held leadership roles including chairman of the Department of Neurology, medical director of the Department of Development, member of the Mayo Clinic Rochester Executive Board, and vice-chairman of the Mayo Clinic Executive Board. As CEO, he reorganized Mayo Clinic from a holding company into a single unit with one business plan and strategy. During his tenure, the number of patients seen annually increased from 1 million to more than 1.3 million, and revenue grew from $7.9 billion to $12 billion. Mayo Clinic ranked No. 1 on U.S. News & World Report's "Best Hospitals" list for four of his last five years as CEO.
Noseworthy led initiatives including a proton beam cancer therapy program with treatment centers in Phoenix and Rochester, Minnesota, and the development of a Mayo Clinic-affiliated network of medical practices nationwide. He also oversaw the launch of Mayo Clinic's Destination Medical Center, a 20-year $5.6 billion economic development initiative. Noseworthy retired in accordance with Mayo Clinic's tradition of rotating leadership every decade.
Noseworthy has received the Alumnus of the Year award from Dalhousie University, an honorary doctorate of science from the University of Western Ontario, and an honorary doctorate of laws from Dalhousie University. He was named an Officer of the Order of the Orange-Nassau and received the Research!America Geoffrey Beene Builders of Science Award. Noseworthy serves as a Health Governor of the World Economic Forum and has joined the UnitedHealth Group Board of Directors. His career spans clinical research, institutional leadership, and global health policy engagement, contributing to advancements in neurology, healthcare management, and medical research.
