Edie Falco is recognized for her extensive work in American television, film, and theater, known for her versatility across drama, comedy, and stage productions. Falco trained at the Conservatory of Theatre Arts and Film at SUNY Purchase and developed her craft in independent films and New York theater before establishing her reputation in television. Before her breakout role, Falco appeared regularly on the prison series "Oz" and police dramas including "Law & Order" and "Homicide: Life on the Street," where she was noted for a naturalistic acting style.
Falco's career reached a pivotal moment when she was cast as Carmela Soprano in the HBO drama "The Sopranos." Her portrayal of Carmela Soprano received critical acclaim and is regarded as one of television's significant performances, noted for its complexity and depth. Falco became one of the few actresses to win the Emmy, the Golden Globe, and the SAG Award in a single year for a dramatic role. She is also the first female actor to receive the Television Critics Association Award for Individual Achievement in Drama.
After "The Sopranos," Falco starred as the title character in Showtime's dark comedy series "Nurse Jackie." Her role as Jackie Peyton earned her a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, making her the first female performer to win the lead actress Emmy Award in both drama and comedy categories. Falco returned to Broadway in the revival of John Guare's "The House of Blue Leaves," earning a nomination for the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play.
In film, Falco's performance in "Laws of Gravity" earned her an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Female Lead, and she received the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award for Best Supporting Actress for her work in John Sayles' "Sunshine State."
Falco has continued to take on a range of roles, including in the miniseries "Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders," where she played defense attorney Leslie Abramson, and in the TV series "Tommy," about the first female chief of police in Los Angeles. She was also cast as Hillary Clinton in the miniseries "Impeachment: American Crime Story."
