Laura D'Andrea Tyson Biography
Laura D'Andrea Tyson is an American economist whose career includes leadership roles in academia, government, and global policy. Tyson earned a Bachelor of Arts in economics from Smith College and a doctorate in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She began her academic career as an assistant professor in the economics department at Princeton University before joining the University of California, Berkeley, where she held appointments in the economics department and later at Haas School of Business.
Tyson is recognized for her expertise in trade policy, economic competitiveness, and public policy. Her book, "Who's Bashing Whom? Trade Conflict in High-Technology Industries," addresses the debate between free trade and managed trade, using case studies in sectors such as electronics and aerospace to analyze U.S. and Japanese market dynamics. The book has influenced policy discussions on international trade and competitiveness.
Tyson served in President Bill Clinton's cabinet as chair of the President's Council of Economic Advisers and as director of the White House National Economic Council, becoming the first woman to hold both positions. Following her government service, Tyson was dean of the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley, and later dean of London Business School, where she established the Center for Women in Business. She was the first woman to lead a major American business school.
Tyson has been a member of the U.S. Department of State Foreign Affairs Policy Board and served on President Barack Obama's Council on Jobs and Competitiveness and the President's Economic Recovery Advisory Board. She has also participated in French President Emmanuel Macron's Commission d'experts sur les grands défis économiques. Her research examines the effects of automation and digital technologies on the future of work, and she co-organizes WITS (Work and Intelligent Tools and System), an interdisciplinary group focused on artificial intelligence and its impact on employment and education.
Tyson's policy work includes research on the relationship between women's rights and economic performance. She is a member of the World Economic Forum Global Future Council on the New Agenda for Equity and Social Justice and co-authors the World Economic Forum Annual Global Gender Gap Report. Tyson has published extensively on topics such as automation, artificial intelligence, trade competitiveness, and women's economic empowerment. She contributes to Project Syndicate and provides media commentary on U.S. and global trade, economics, and high-tech competition.
