Cynthia McFadden Biography
Cynthia McFadden is a broadcast journalist with a career spanning more than four decades in television news. She holds a law degree from Columbia University and graduated summa cum laude from Bowdoin College. McFadden served as executive producer of Fred Friendly's Media and Society seminars at Columbia University. At the Courtroom Television Network, she anchored live coverage of more than 200 trials and held roles as anchor and senior producer.
At ABC News, McFadden was co-anchor of "Nightline" for nearly 10 years, following her work as the network's legal correspondent and as correspondent and co-anchor of "Primetime." She was the first woman to anchor a news program in late night and contributed to establishing the program as a leader in its time slot. McFadden served as legal editor and narrator of the ABC News documentary series "In the Jury Room," which chronicled six homicide trials and was the first program to show jury deliberations in a death penalty case. Her interviews have included author J.K. Rowling, recording artist Taylor Swift, and First Lady Michelle Obama.
McFadden later joined NBC News' investigations team, where she reported on humanitarian and human rights issues, including child labor in the mica mines of Madagascar and conditions in refugee camps in the Central African Republic. She led the first investigation by a major news organization into the forced sterilization of American citizens and reported on human rights abuses in Mexican mental hospitals, which contributed to institutional reforms.
McFadden has received numerous journalism awards, including nearly 20 Emmy nominations and three wins, two Peabody Awards, an Edward R. Murrow Award for hard news, the Overseas Press Club Award, and a Loeb Award for business reporting. As part of ABC's 9/11 reporting team, she received a DuPont Award. She has also been presented with the Matrix Award. McFadden serves as co-chair of the board of the International Women's Media Foundation, is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and is a trustee of Save the Children. She has been named a member of the Peabody Board of Jurors, reflecting her commitment to journalism that holds power accountable and amplifies the voices of vulnerable communities.
