Cesar Kuriyama is a Peruvian-born American director, producer, 3D VFX artist, animator, and speaker, best known for creating the innovative video journaling app, 1 Second Everyday.
Kuriyama has been selecting one second of video from every day of his life, and editing them together into a montage that both records his life, and forces him to reevaluate how he approaches each day. He subsequently turned his idea into an app called 1 Second Everyday. Users can record one second of video each day and edit them together into a film.
Kuriyama worked in advertising for major clients such as BMW, Verizon, Gillette, and the NFL. However, inspired by a TED Talk on the power of taking time off, he decided to take a year-long sabbatical in 2011 to travel and focus on personal projects. During this time, he began recording one second of video each day to combat his frustration with memory lapses and to create a meaningful record of his experiences.
This personal project culminated in a 365-second video titled "1 Second Everyday – Age 30," which went viral and garnered widespread media attention. Recognizing the potential impact of this concept, Kuriyama launched a successful Kickstarter campaign in 2012 to develop the 1 Second Everyday app, enabling users worldwide to document their lives in a similar fashion. The app was officially released in January 2013 and has since been downloaded millions of times.
Kuriyama's work has been featured in various media outlets, and he has delivered talks at prestigious conferences, including TED 2012, where he discussed the transformative power of capturing daily moments. Beyond his entrepreneurial endeavors, he has also taught animation courses at institutions such as NYU, Harvard University, and Pratt Institute.
