Damon Davis Biography
Damon Davis is an award-winning post-disciplinary artist, musician, and filmmaker based in St. Louis, Missouri. His work spans illustration, painting, printmaking, music, film, and public art, exploring how identity is shaped by power and mythology. Through these creative mediums, Davis examines the influence of myths on political and interpersonal landscapes, focusing on both the challenges and the joy within the Black experience.
Davis is co-director of the documentary "Whose Streets?", which chronicles the Ferguson rebellion and the events surrounding the killing of Michael Brown. The film premiered in competition at Sundance Film Festival and received nominations for Critics' Choice and Gotham Independent Film awards. Filmmaker Magazine named Davis and co-director Sabaah Folayan among the "25 New Faces of Independent Film" for their work on the film, and Independent Magazine included Davis in its list of 10 Filmmakers to Watch.
His public art installation "All Hands on Deck" is part of the collection at the National Museum of African American History and Culture. The project, which documents the hands of individuals who shaped the Ferguson movement, was recognized by critic Ben Davis as one of the "100 Works of Art That Defined the Decade." Davis's first solo exhibition, "Darker Gods in The Garden of Low Hanging Heavens," debuted in St. Louis and later traveled to Art Basel Miami, exploring surrealist interpretations of Black culture and constructing new mythologies in response to established tropes.
The documentary short "A Story to Tell," profiling Davis and his creative process, received an Emmy Award Mid-America for Best Short Form Program. Davis has been recognized as a Firelight Media Fellow, Sundance Lab Fellow, TED Fellow, and Kennedy Center Citizen Artist Fellow. He founded the music collective and label FarFetched, where he serves as creative director. Davis continues to bridge visual art, film, and activism through work exhibited at the Smithsonian and major museums, and serves as faculty in the MFA in Film program at Vermont College of Fine Arts, contributing his multidisciplinary perspective to the field of independent filmmaking and contemporary art.
