Betül Kaçar Biography
Dr. Betül Kaçar is a Turkish-American astrobiologist and professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, specializing in molecular biology, evolutionary biology, and planetary science. Kaçar leads a NASA-funded astrobiology research center and directs a molecular paleobiology laboratory, focusing on questions related to the origin and evolution of life on Earth and the search for life beyond the solar system. She is recognized as the first Turkish woman and the youngest scientist to lead a NASA research center.
Kaçar employs biochemical and phylogenetic methods to investigate the origins of life, using phylogenetic tree algorithms to infer ancestral gene sequences. Her research team synthesizes ancient genes, particularly those encoding essential enzymes found across all domains of life, and inserts them into modern bacteria to study the physiological impact of ancient enzymes. Kaçar was the first scientist to resurrect an ancient gene within a modern microbial genome. Her laboratory has also reconstructed enzymes used by early life on Earth and validated biosignatures in rocks, contributing to the field of planetary biosignature detection and the search for ancient life on other worlds.
Kaçar has received several recognitions, including the NASA Astrobiology Postdoctoral Fellowship, the Templeton Fellowship, and the NASA Early Career Faculty Fellowship. She has led an independent research group at Harvard University in the Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology and has been a member of the Harvard Origins Initiative. Kaçar received the Scialog fellowship for studies on life in the universe and the Keck Foundation Award for research on ancient metabolisms. She has secured over $9 million in research grants as a lead investigator. Asteroid 284919 Kaçar, discovered by astronomers using the WISE space telescope, was named in her honor.
Kaçar is active in science communication, delivering a TED Talk on simulating ancient environments and the origins of life, and appearing on the Lex Fridman Podcast to discuss topics such as the origin of life, ancient DNA, panspermia, and extraterrestrial life. Her work has been featured in Quanta Magazine, NOVA Science, BBC Focus, Wired, and PBS. She has served as a plenary speaker at the NASA-sponsored Astrobiology Science Conference and contributed to the National Academies' panel on A Science Strategy for the Human Exploration of Mars, helping to define NASA's science objectives for Mars exploration.
Kaçar co-founded SAGANet, an astrobiology outreach and grassroots network supporting teachers and students in astrobiology research globally. She has partnered with the UN Women Generation Equality Campaign to promote education for girls and women worldwide. Throughout her career, Kaçar has contributed to advancing astrobiology, molecular paleobiology, and science education, and is recognized for her ability to communicate complex scientific concepts to diverse audiences.
