Walter Willett Biography
Dr. Walter C. Willett is a professor of epidemiology and nutrition at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. Willett served as chair of the Department of Nutrition at Harvard for 25 years. He holds an M.D. from the University of Michigan Medical School and a doctorate in public health from Harvard. Willett’s career has focused on the intersection of medicine, public health, and nutritional science, contributing to the understanding of the relationship between diet and disease.
Willett has concentrated his research on developing and evaluating methods to study the effects of diet on the occurrence of major diseases, utilizing both questionnaire and biochemical approaches. He has applied these methods in large-scale studies such as the Nurses' Health Studies I and II and the Health Professionals Follow-up Study, which include nearly 300,000 participants with repeated dietary assessments. These cohorts have provided detailed information on the long-term health consequences of food choices. Willett’s research has examined the impact of alcohol consumption on breast cancer risk, the effects of trans-fatty acids on cardiovascular disease, and dietary influences on colon cancer. His work has also demonstrated the association between obesity and increased risk of breast, colon, and other cancers.
Willett has published more than 2,000 original research papers and reviews, primarily on lifestyle risk factors for heart disease, cancer, and other conditions. He is the author of the textbook "Nutritional Epidemiology," published by Oxford University Press, and has written several books for the general public, including "Eat, Drink and Be Healthy: The Harvard Medical School Guide to Healthy Eating," "Eat, Drink, and Weigh Less" (co-authored with Mollie Katzen), "The Fertility Diet" (co-authored with Jorge Chavarro and Pat Skerrett), and "Thinfluence" (co-authored with Malissa Wood), which discusses the influence of social and environmental factors on weight.
Willett is among the most cited nutritionists internationally and ranks among the top five most cited individuals in clinical science. He has received numerous national and international awards, including the Linus Pauling Institute Prize for Health Research, the Komen Foundation's Brinker Award for Scientific Distinction, the Honda Prize for Echo-Technology, the American Cancer Society's Medal of Honor, and the Bristol-Myers Squibb/Mead Johnson Freedom to Discover Award for Distinguished Achievement in Nutrition Research. Willett is a member of the National Academy of Medicine and has been recognized for his research on the long-term consequences of dietary choices.
In addition to his research and teaching, Willett is recognized for his work on the intersection of diet, global health, and environmental sustainability. He co-chaired the EAT-Lancet Commission with Johan Rockström, bringing together experts from multiple disciplines to examine the impact of the planetary health diet on human and environmental health. The commission estimated that global adoption of the diet could prevent millions of premature deaths annually. Willett also co-chairs the EAT-Lancet 2.0 Commission, continuing to advance research and policy on nutrition, public health, and sustainability.
