Terence Winter Biography
Terence Winter is an American screenwriter and producer known for his contributions to television and film. After practicing law for two years, Winter moved to Los Angeles to pursue a screenwriting career, entering the industry through the Warner Bros. Sitcom Writers Workshop. Before joining "The Sopranos," he wrote and produced a variety of television series, including "The Great Defender," "Xena: Warrior Princess," "Sister, Sister," and Eddie Murphy's "The PJs."
Winter's major breakthrough came with HBO's "The Sopranos," where he served as a writer and executive producer from the second season through the end of the series. He wrote 25 episodes and directed one, earning four Emmy Awards and three Writers Guild Awards. His episode "Pine Barrens," directed by Steve Buscemi, received both the Writers Guild Award and the Edgar Award. Winter also won two Emmys as executive producer and writer for the episode "Long Term Parking."
Winter created, wrote, and executive produced the HBO series "Boardwalk Empire." The premiere episode achieved HBO's highest ratings for a premiere in several years, and the series received a Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series Drama and a Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Ensemble in a Drama Series. "Boardwalk Empire" also earned multiple Emmy nominations for Outstanding Drama Series.
Winter wrote the screenplay for Martin Scorsese's "The Wolf of Wall Street," earning Academy Award, BAFTA Award, and Writers Guild of America Award nominations for Best Adapted Screenplay. He co-created, wrote, and executive produced the HBO drama series "Vinyl." Winter has also served as executive producer and writer on the Paramount+ crime series "Tulsa King" with Taylor Sheridan. Throughout his career in film and television, Winter has developed a reputation for crafting morally complex narratives and creating compelling characters in the crime drama genre.
