Susan Crawford Biography
Susan Crawford is the John A. Reilly Clinical Professor at Harvard Law School and a Senior Fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. She has authored several significant works, including "Captive Audience: The Telecom Industry and Monopoly Power in the New Gilded Age," "Fiber: The Coming Tech Revolution—and Why America Might Miss It," and "The Responsive City: Engaging Communities Through Data-Smart Governance." Crawford is also the author of "Charleston: Race, Water, and the Coming Storm," exploring the intersections of climate adaptation and public policy. Her expertise spans telecommunications policy and law, making significant contributions to public discourse through her writings for Bloomberg View and Wired.
Crawford's academic career is marked by substantial teaching and advisory roles. She served as a special assistant to President Obama for science, technology, and innovation policy and co-led the FCC transition team between the Bush and Obama administrations. Crawford is a former board member of ICANN and the founder of OneWebDay, a global Earth Day for the internet celebrated each September 22. She has held visiting professorships at Yale and the University of Michigan, and her past academic positions include Stanton Professor of the First Amendment at Harvard's Kennedy School and a professorship at the University of Michigan Law School from 2008 to 2010. Currently, she is a member of Mayor Bill de Blasio’s Broadband Task Force and has previously served on Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s Advisory Council on Technology and Innovation.
Crawford received her B.A. and J.D. from Yale University, clerked for Judge Raymond J. Dearie of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York, and was a partner at Wilmer, Cutler & Pickering (now WilmerHale) in Washington, D.C., before transitioning to academia. Her recognitions include listings as one of Fast Company's Most Influential Women in Technology in 2009, one of Politico’s 50 Thinkers, Doers, and Visionaries Transforming Politics in 2015, and one of Time magazine’s Tech 40: The Most Influential Minds in Tech in 2013. She continues to contribute to academic and policy discussions on a broad spectrum of issues related to technology, public policy, and law. Crawford resides in New York City.
