Alicia Garza Biography
Alicia Garza is an organizer, activist, writer, and speaker dedicated to black liberation. As the Strategy and Partnerships Director of the National Domestic Workers Alliance, she focuses on intersecting race, gender, and economic issues. In 2018, Garza founded Black Futures Lab, aimed at building political power in black communities. She is also a co-founder of the Black Lives Matter Global Network, which was established following the killing of Florida teen Trayvon Martin, to address state violence against black people.
Additionally, Garza has co-founded Supermajority, a community focused on women’s activism, and has authored the book "The Purpose of Power: How We Come Together When We Fall Apart," released on October 20, 2020. Her contributions span various media outlets including Time, MSNBC, The Washington Post, The New York Times, The Guardian, Elle, and Essence.
Garza has been recognized with several prestigious awards, including the Sydney Peace Prize, Adweek Beacon Award, Glamour's Women of the Year Award, Marie Claire's New Guard Award, and was honored as the Community Change Agent at BET’s Black Girls Rock Awards. Listed in TIME’s 100 Most Influential People in 2020, Bloomberg 50, and BBC’s 100 Women 2020, she continues to influence global discourse.
