Steve Martin Biography
Steve Martin is a comedian, actor, writer, playwright, producer, and musician whose career in entertainment spans more than five decades. Martin first gained national attention as a writer for "The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour," earning a Primetime Emmy Award. In the 1970s, he performed his unique comedy routines to sold-out theaters across the United States and became the first comedian to sell out an arena performance. His experimental comedic style, influenced by vaudeville and his background in philosophy, impacted a generation of performers.
Martin transitioned to film with a starring role in Carl Reiner's comedy "The Jerk," which he also co-wrote. His film credits include "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid," "All of Me," "Roxanne," "Father of the Bride," and "Cheaper by the Dozen." Martin received critical recognition for his performances in "Roxanne" and "Parenthood," establishing himself as a leading comedic actor with both physical comedy and dramatic range. As an author, Martin has written novels and nonfiction, including "Shopgirl," "The Pleasure of My Company," and "Born Standing Up."
Martin's work extends to theater, where he wrote the books for the musical "Bright Star" and the comedy "Meteor Shower," both of which premiered on Broadway. He co-wrote the music for "Bright Star." As a musician, Martin is a Grammy Award-winning banjo player and has released four comedy albums, earning Grammy Awards for "Let's Get Small" and "A Wild and Crazy Guy." He received another Grammy for his bluegrass album "The Crow: New Songs for the 5-String Banjo." Martin has performed at venues such as Carnegie Hall, Royal Festival Hall in London, and the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C.
Martin co-created and starred in the Hulu comedy series "Only Murders in the Building" with Martin Short and Selena Gomez, earning multiple Primetime Emmy Award nominations, Screen Actors Guild Award nominations, a Golden Globe Award nomination, and a Peabody Award nomination. He has toured nationally with Martin Short and released the Netflix special "An Evening You Will Forget for the Rest of Your Life."
Martin's achievements have been recognized with an Academy Award, five Grammy Awards, a Primetime Emmy Award, and a Screen Actors Guild Award, as well as nominations for nine Golden Globe Awards and two Tony Awards. He has also received honorary awards including the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, Kennedy Center Honors, Academy Honorary Award, and AFI Life Achievement Award. Comedy Central ranked Martin among the 100 greatest stand-up comics. Martin's contributions to comedy, film, television, literature, and music continue to influence the entertainment industry.
