Rob Scheer Biography
Growing up in an abusive household before his placement in foster care, Rob Scheer had all the odds stacked against him. Kicked out of his foster family’s home within weeks after turning eighteen—with a year left of high school to go—he had to resort to sleeping in his car and in public bathrooms. He suffered from drug addiction and battled with depression, never knowing when his next meal would be or where he would sleep at night. But by true perseverance, he was able to find his own path and achieve his wildest dreams.
Today, Scheer is the founder of the international nonprofit Comfort Cases and an outspoken advocate for youth in foster care. His interview with Upworthy went viral in February 2017 garnering more than 100 million views, and he was later featured on "Ellen," the "TODAY" show, "The View," and "NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt," just to name a few. In 2018, Scheer was named one of CNN’s Heroes. Scheer and his partner Reece Scheer are also featured in Bryce Dallas Howard’s documentary film "Dads" on AppleTV+.
Scheer is also the host of Fostering Change, a weekly audio and video podcast that brings in guests of prominence who discuss issues regarding foster care, adoption, LGBTQ+ and other timely and topical issues.
The author of "A Forever Family: Fostering Change One Child at a Time," Scheer’s memoir tells the inspiring story of his journey from foster care to foster parent and his drive to rebuild a broken system.
In May 2022, he received an honorary doctoral degree, a Doctorate of Humane Letters, from Lynn University, where he also delivered the commencement speech.

Instead, sitting by the front door of his foster family’s home, Scheer found his life’s belongings in a trash bag. The monthly check his foster family had been receiving stopped coming when he turned eighteen, and Scheer was told to leave. In that moment, Scheer found himself homeless. Scheer knew the odds were against him, but he was determined not to be the statistic that our society has come to expect of a homeless teen. Scheer started on a journey of hardship with the conviction that his choices would lead him down a path to success. Determination and perseverance kept Scheer in school, and with each new challenge, Scheer continued to work quietly towards his dreams of a better life. The lessons he learned about overcoming adversity and believing in oneself inspire us all to reach our highest potential.

Rob Scheer knows that the first step is for our community to realize there is a problem. There are far too many people who have little to no knowledge of the struggles children in foster care face. These children are truly invisible in our society. Not only must we raise awareness of their plight, but we must come together to alleviate their suffering. We must ensure that the basic needs of children are being met as they enter into care. Despite the frightening and chaotic transition they are experiencing, these children deserve to have a sense of dignity as they are moved to another home.
We must also realize that we are simply graduating foster children from the foster system to the prison system. We are not providing these children with the educational and life skills required to launch a successful future. Scheer inspires us to realize the responsibility that each and every one of us holds to take care of these children and ensure that they have an equal opportunity for success in adulthood.
