Rachel Bloom is an American actress, comedian, singer-songwriter, writer, producer, and author recognized for her contributions to television, musical comedy, and mental health advocacy. Bloom is best known for co-creating and starring in the TV series "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend," a musical dramedy on CW, for which she received an Emmy Award, a Golden Globe, a Critics' Choice Award, and a TCA Award. The series is noted for its integration of musical theater, comedy, feminist themes, and Jewish humor.
Bloom's career began with a viral internet presence, notably with the music video "F*ck Me, Ray Bradbury," which was nominated for a Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation: Short Form. While working as a television writer in Los Angeles, she continued to produce internet music videos, leading to her collaboration with "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend" co-creator Aline Brosh McKenna. Bloom released the musical comedy albums "Please Love Me" and "Suck It, Christmas," the latter featuring comedic takes on Chanukah.
In "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend," Bloom served as co-creator, executive producer, and lead actress, portraying Rebecca Bunch. The show earned critical acclaim and developed a dedicated following, recognized for its depiction of mental illness and its casting choices that challenged stereotypes. Bloom received the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a TV Series – Musical or Comedy, the Critics' Choice Award for Best Actress in a TV Comedy, and the TCA Award for Individual Achievement in Comedy. She also won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics for the song "Antidepressants Are So Not a Big Deal." The series was honored with the East West Players' Visionary Award for its representation of the Asian Pacific American community.
Bloom's work extends beyond television. Her voice acting credits include roles in "The Angry Birds Movie 2," "Trolls World Tour," and "Extinct." She has performed live shows such as "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend: Live" at venues including Radio City Music Hall and The London Palladium. Bloom is the author of the memoir "I Want to Be Where the Normal People Are."
Bloom's creative projects address topics such as anxiety and mental health. Her Netflix special, "Death, Let Me Do My Special," adapted from an off-Broadway show, explores personal experiences including her daughter's time in the NICU and the loss of her collaborator Adam Schlesinger. Bloom's work continues to resonate with audiences for its candid exploration of mental health and its innovative approach to musical comedy. She has also appeared on Broadway, starring as Toinette in The Imaginary Invalid at the Todd Haimes Theatre.
