John Leguizamo Biography
John Leguizamo is a Colombian-American actor, comedian, playwright, and producer whose career spans stand-up comedy, feature films, television, and Broadway. Leguizamo has appeared in more than 100 films, produced over 20 films and documentaries, made more than 30 television appearances, and produced various television projects. He has consistently used his platform to promote Latino representation and culture across multiple entertainment mediums.
Leguizamo began his career on the New York comedy club circuit before gaining recognition with Off-Broadway one-man shows. He performed "Mambo Mouth," portraying seven Latino characters, which won the Obie and Outer Critics Circle Award and was later filmed for HBO, earning a CableACE Award. He followed with "Spic-O-Rama," which played in Chicago and New York, winning the Drama Desk Award and four CableACE Awards. His film career includes roles in "Super Mario Bros." and "Carlito's Way," as well as a Golden Globe-nominated performance in "To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar." Leguizamo has also appeared in "Romeo + Juliet," "Moulin Rouge!," "Summer of Sam," "John Wick," and "The Menu." As a voice actor, he played Sid the Sloth in the "Ice Age" franchise and voiced Bruno Madrigal in Disney's "Encanto." In 2026, he was featured in Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey."
On Broadway, Leguizamo debuted with "Freak," a semi-autobiographical one-person play filmed for HBO and directed by Spike Lee. "Freak" was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Play, with Leguizamo also nominated for Best Actor in a Play, and the filmed version earned him the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Individual Performance in a Variety or Music Program. He continued his Broadway work with "Sexaholix... A Love Story" and "Ghetto Klown," the latter earning Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards. Leguizamo received a Special Tony Award following an extended Broadway run of "Latin History for Morons," a one-man show exploring 500 years of Latin history from the Aztec and Incan Empires to World War II. The Special Tony Award recognized his contributions to Broadway and his commitment to diverse storytelling.
In addition to his work on stage and screen, Leguizamo has contributed to literature and television journalism. His graphic novel adaptation of "Ghetto Klown" was nominated for an Eisner Award. He hosted the MSNBC documentary series "Leguizamo Does America," further establishing his role as a cultural commentator and advocate. His directorial debut, "Critical Thinking," premiered at the SXSW Film Festival. Throughout his career, Leguizamo has received two Obie Awards, three Drama Desk Awards, three Outer Critics Circle Awards, one Emmy Award, and six CableACE Awards, making him one of the most recognized Latino artists in American entertainment. Leguizamo is known for his creative range and advocacy for underrepresented voices in the entertainment industry.
