Porter Ellett Biography
Porter Ellett is the assistant running backs coach for the Kansas City Chiefs. Prior to his promotion to running backs coach, Ellett spent three seasons as an offensive quality control coach (2020-22) after serving three seasons as the senior assistant to the head coach (2017-19).
In 2022, Ellett worked closely with the tight ends, running backs and QB Patrick Mahomes. The Chiefs offense led the league in many categories: yards per game (413.6), points per game (29.2), passing yards (5,250), passing touchdowns (41), passing first downs (272) and pass plays of 25+ yards (49). Ellett assisted with the development of rookie RB Isiah Pacheco who went on to rush for 830 yards and five touchdowns. The tight ends continued their productivity in the Chiefs offense and TE Travis Kelce recorded his seventh-consecutive 1,000-yard season, passing former TE Rob Gronkowski in career receiving yards with 10,344. With Ellett's assistance, Mahomes completed 435 of his 638 passes for a 67.1 completion percentage, the highest of his career, as he set franchise records for passing yards (5,250) and single-season passing first downs (272). Mahomes' 2022 performance earned him his second NFL MVP and Super Bowl MVP after the Chiefs beat the Eagles 38-35 in Super Bowl LVII.
For the 2021 season, Ellett continued to work closely with the tight end group. Kelce recorded his sixth-consecutive 1,000-yard season, extending his NFL record for tight ends. Kelce recorded two game-winning touchdowns in overtime in 2021, his first coming against the Chargers in LA and second in the divisional round against Buffalo. Following the season, Kelce earned his seventh Pro Bowl nomination.
In 2020, Ellett worked with an offense that finished first in total net yards per game (415.8) and passing yards per game (303.4). He also assisted with the tight ends group which featured first-team AP All-Pro, PFWA All-NFL and Pro Bowl Kelce who recorded over 1,000 receiving yards for the fifth-consecutive season, extending his previously established NFL record for tight ends. He became the first tight end in NFL history with multiple seasons of 100+ receptions in his career (2018 and 2020), while his 1,416 receiving yards were the most-ever by a tight end in NFL history, passing 49ers TE George Kittle's previous record of 1,377 yards set in 2018.
During his time as senior assistant to the head coach (2017-19), Ellett worked closely with Head Coach Andy Reid and Offensive Coordinator Eric Bieniemy organizing the day-to-day operations of the team, player and staff communications with the head coach and the football calendar. In this role, Ellett also assisted with the development of the quarterbacks.
Prior to his arrival, Ellett served as a graduate assistant at SMG McLane Stadium at Baylor University while pursuing his Masters in Sport Management. While completing his undergraduate degree at Brigham Young University, he served as an equipment room attendant for the football team.
Outside of athletics, Ellett has a long history of service work under his belt. Since 2007, he has partnered with Coolspeak as a motivational speaker and facilitator, delivering over 1,000 keynotes across the country.
Additionally, Ellett owns Camp Overcome, a youth development program that implements positive attitudes through sports. When he isn't volunteering, Ellett trains and competes in Paralympic swimming and triathlons.
