Philip Rivers Biography
Philip Rivers is a former quarterback for the San Diego/Los Angeles Chargers and Indianapolis Colts of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at North Carolina State and was selected in the first round of the 2004 NFL Draft as the fourth overall pick by the New York Giants, who traded him to the San Diego Chargers during the draft. Rivers was a member of the Chargers franchise for 16 seasons before signing with the Colts in 2020.
After spending his first two seasons in a backup role, Rivers served as the Chargers' starting quarterback from 2006 to 2019. During his tenure with the Chargers, he was named to eight Pro Bowls while leading the team to four division titles and six postseason appearances. He also helped the team win their first playoff game since 1994 during the 2007 season, which culminated in a trip to the AFC Championship Game. His career in the postseason has been less successful, however, compiling a 5–6 record and never reaching the Super Bowl. Rivers went on to join the Indianapolis Colts in 2020, where he spent his final season in the NFL and led the Colts to the playoffs.
Statistically, Rivers ranks fifth all-time in both passing yards and touchdowns and holds a career passer rating of 95.2, which is tenth-best all-time among NFL quarterbacks with at least 1,500 passing attempts. He is also second all-time in consecutive regular-season starts by a quarterback in NFL history, having started every regular-season game since 2006. He was the active leader in consecutive quarterback starts at the time of his retirement.
Rivers holds a bachelor's degree in business management from North Carolina State University. He received an honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters and addressed the Class of 2014 at the 125th Annual Commencement Ceremony of The Catholic University of America.
Rivers, a devout Catholic, lives with his wife and their nine children in Indianapolis, Indiana.
