Peter Singer Biography
Peter Singer is an Australian moral philosopher and bioethicist recognized for his contributions to applied ethics, animal rights, and utilitarian philosophy. Singer is Emeritus Ira W. DeCamp Professor of Bioethics at Princeton University and Laureate Professor at the Centre for Applied Philosophy and Public Ethics at the University of Melbourne.
Singer's book "Animal Liberation" is credited with launching the animal rights movement, addressing issues of animal welfare in factory farming and scientific research. His essay "Famine, Affluence, and Morality" challenged conventional views on moral obligations and influenced the effective altruism movement. Singer's "Practical Ethics" is widely used in the study of applied ethics, and "Rethinking Life and Death" received the National Book Council's Banjo Award for non-fiction. He has written, co-authored, edited, or co-edited more than 50 books, including "The Expanding Circle," "How Are We to Live?," "The Life You Can Save," "The Point of View of the Universe" (with Katarzyna de Lazari-Radek), "Ethics in the Real World," and "The Most Good You Can Do." His works have been translated into more than 30 languages.
Singer is the founding president of the International Association of Bioethics and co-editor of the academic journal Bioethics. He has served as chair of philosophy at Monash University, where he established the Centre for Human Bioethics. Singer also founded The Life You Can Save, an organization based on his book, which promotes effective giving to alleviate global poverty. His philosophical arguments have inspired the effective altruism movement and influenced philanthropic initiatives such as the Giving Pledge.
Singer was appointed Companion of the Order of Australia for service to philosophy and bioethics as a leader of public debate. He received the Berggruen Prize for Philosophy and Culture and shared the BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award in Humanities and Social Sciences with Steven Pinker. Time magazine named Singer among the 100 most influential people in the world, and he has been recognized as one of Australia's most influential public intellectuals. Singer's career demonstrates the impact of philosophy on public policy, animal welfare, and global ethics.
