Nzinga Shaw Biography
Nzinga Shaw is recognized as a pioneer in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), having made history as the first person to hold the Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer title in the NBA. As president and CEO of Attack the Glass, LLC, Shaw leads a firm focused on advancing DEI strategies in business. An alumna of Spelman College, she also holds a master's degree from the University of Pennsylvania. Before her work in the NBA, Shaw served as the first in-house talent recruiter for the National Football League. Her human resources career includes serving as senior vice president of global diversity and inclusion for Edelman.
As Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer in the NBA, Shaw led the Atlanta Hawks' diversity and inclusion initiatives, which earned the team the NBA Inclusion Leadership Award. She launched the MOSAIC symposium—Model of Shaping Atlanta through Inclusive Conversations—and guided the Hawks to become the first professional sports team to celebrate the LGBTQ community. Shaw's work with the Hawks helped define the Chief DEI Officer role within professional sports, demonstrating the importance of DEI leadership as both a cultural and business imperative.
Shaw later became the first Chief Inclusion and Diversity Officer at Edelman, Starbucks, Marsh McLennan, and the NBA. At Starbucks, she contributed to best practices that supported increased retention rates and progress toward BIPOC representation at all corporate, retail, and manufacturing levels. Shaw also served as president of TurnkeyZRG, a sports and entertainment talent recruiting firm, and as ZRG's managing director, chief inclusion and diversity officer, and global practice head of the DEI client-facing practice.
The Recording Academy appointed Shaw as its chief DEI officer, expanding her influence across the music industry. She serves as an adjunct professor at Fisk University and is a member of its board of trustees. Appointed by President Jimmy Carter, Shaw completed a six-year term on the board of councilors of The Carter Center. Shaw has been recognized by Sports Business Journal as a "Game Changer in Sports" and "Leaders Under 40," as well as by Atlanta Business Chronicle's "40 Under 40." Her career demonstrates sustained leadership in building equitable organizations across sports, business, and culture.
