Dick Lehr Biography
Dick Lehr is an American author, journalist, and professor of journalism at Boston University, recognized for his work in investigative reporting and true crime. Lehr served as a reporter at The Boston Globe, where he worked as the legal affairs reporter, magazine and feature writer, and was a member of the Spotlight Team, the newspaper's investigative reporting unit. Prior to his tenure at the Globe, Lehr, who is also an attorney, reported for The Hartford Courant. Throughout his career, he has received honors including the Scripps Howard Public Service Award, the Loeb Award, the Hancock Award, and the Edgar Allan Poe Award for Best Fact Crime from Mystery Writers of America.
Lehr is known as the co-author of the New York Times bestseller and Edgar Award winner "Black Mass: Whitey Bulger, the FBI and a Devil's Deal," and its sequel, "Whitey: The Life of America's Most Notorious Mob Boss." Drawing from investigations conducted with the Spotlight Team, "Black Mass" examines the relationship between Boston crime boss James Whitey Bulger and FBI special agent John Connolly. Lehr and co-author Gerry O'Neill first reported on Bulger's connection to the FBI through their work at the Globe. "Black Mass" was later adapted into a major motion picture.
Lehr has authored eight books, using true crime narratives to explore the American criminal justice system and its broader societal implications. His book "The Fence: A Police Cover-up Along Boston's Racial Divide" is a non-fiction account of a police brutality case in Boston and was an Edgar Award finalist. "The Birth of a Movement: How Birth of a Nation Ignited the Battle for Civil Rights" served as the basis for a PBS/Independent Lens documentary. "Judgment Ridge: The True Story behind the Dartmouth Murders" was also an Edgar Award finalist.
Lehr's book "White Hot Hate" investigates domestic terrorism, focusing on a Department of Justice case involving a foiled bombing plot targeting Somali immigrants in Kansas. Lehr was a John S. Knight Journalism Fellow at Stanford University. As a professor at Boston University and author, Lehr applies investigative journalism techniques to stories that examine crime, justice, and civil rights in the United States.
