Nick Bilton

Keynote Speaker: New York Times-Bestselling Author, Journalist & Filmmaker; Executive Producer of "60 Minutes"; Emmy Award-Winning Founder of True Story Productions

Nick Bilton Biography

Nick Bilton is a British-American investigative journalist, author, screenwriter, and filmmaker whose career spans major media institutions. Bilton has more than two decades of experience in journalism, focusing on the intersection of technology, culture, and power. He worked at The New York Times as a design editor in the newsroom, a researcher in the R&D labs, a technology columnist, and the lead writer for the Bits blog. Bilton later became a special correspondent for Vanity Fair, contributing features and columns.

Bilton's reporting has influenced public policy and corporate accountability. His work for The New York Times and Vanity Fair has prompted investigations by the Federal Trade Commission, the Department of Justice, and Congress. His series questioning the Federal Aviation Administration's ban on electronics during takeoff and landing contributed to the agency overturning its policy. Bilton's investigation into Twitter's user engagement metrics led to a class-action settlement against the company. When Twitter attempted to compel him to testify, Bilton successfully defended his First Amendment rights to protect his sources. His investigative journalism has been cited in congressional inquiries, federal investigations, and criminal cases, covering topics such as gun control, privacy, voting, online free speech, and the relationship between technology and democratic institutions.

As an author, Bilton has written three books, two of which became New York Times bestsellers: "I Live in the Future & Here's How It Works: Why Your World, Work, and Brain Are Being Creatively Disrupted," "Hatching Twitter: A True Story of Money, Power, Friendship, and Betrayal," and "American Kingpin: The Epic Hunt for the Criminal Mastermind Behind the Silk Road." "Hatching Twitter" offers a narrative account of Twitter's founding and early growth, while "American Kingpin" explores the Silk Road marketplace, its founder Ross Ulbricht, and the efforts of U.S. law enforcement to apprehend him.

Bilton has produced Emmy Award-winning documentaries, scripted television shows, feature films, and a Webby Award-winning podcast. His television and film work includes HBO's "The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley," directed by Alex Gibney, and HBO's "Fake Famous," which Bilton produced and directed. He has served as executive producer and producer on Netflix documentaries such as "Biggest Heist Ever," "Unknown: Killer Robots," and "Ashley Madison: Sex, Lies & Scandal." Bilton has also written screenplays for major film projects.

Bilton has been named executive producer of 60 Minutes, becoming the fifth executive producer in the program's history and the first to bring experience from outside linear television. He has outlined a vision to expand the 60 Minutes brand across new platforms. Bilton also serves as an adjunct professor at New York University's Interactive Telecommunications Program within the Tisch School of the Arts.
