Matan Berkowitz Biography
Matan Berkowitz, also known by his artist name Ma Tan, is an interdisciplinary artist, inventor, and social impact entrepreneur whose work focuses on the intersection of music, technology, and human accessibility. Berkowitz has been recognized in Forbes 30 Under 30 Most Promising Israelis in Science and Technology. He is an alumnus of the Generational Ambassadors Program at MIT and Harvard, U-Penn's Social Global Impact House, and is a member of the ROI Community.
Berkowitz's inventions translate physical signals—such as brainwaves, heartbeats, and movements—into music, and transform everyday objects into instruments. His work has been exhibited at museums, galleries, events, and stages internationally. Among his notable creations is the "Airstrument," a device that converts hand movements into music, enhancing intuitive and accessible music creation. Earlier in his career, Berkowitz won the Google Glass Hackathon in Israel with "GlassBeats," a wearable music application controlled by head movements. His presentations combine performance and lecture, and his workshops emphasize rapid innovation, focusing on quickly turning ideas into reality without relying solely on technology.
As the founder of Shift, a company specializing in impact-driven innovation, Berkowitz has co-developed solutions for people with disabilities, enabling paralyzed, amputee, blind, and autistic musicians to express themselves through music technology. He produced a hackathon dedicated to music technology for special needs, developing devices that empower musicians with disabilities. Through his company Tongo, Berkowitz contributed to the development of a tongue-computer interface, allowing users to control digital devices using their tongue.
Berkowitz has served as Head of Product at Numa, drawing on his background as a music technologist, TED speaker, and Forbes Under 30 entrepreneur. He regularly speaks and performs for organizations such as TED, Google, Microsoft, and Forbes, often integrating live musical demonstrations of his inventions. Berkowitz has appeared on stages including TEDx, Google Day, Microsoft Think Next, NAMM, and Music Tech Fest. He has also delivered a talk at TED Headquarters in New York as part of the TED NYC event and was invited to create and teach advanced courses at CalArts University based on his work and methodologies. Berkowitz is recognized for his contributions to music technology, innovation, and accessibility.
