Leroy A. Petry Biography
Leroy A. Petry is a retired United States Army soldier and recipient of the Medal of Honor, the nation's highest military decoration, awarded for gallantry in Afghanistan. As a weapons squad leader with the 75th Ranger Regiment, Petry threw a live grenade away from his fellow Rangers, saving their lives at the cost of his right hand. Despite severe wounds to both legs and this injury, he continued issuing orders and fighting, demonstrating leadership under fire and resilience in combat.
Petry's military career includes multiple deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, where he served in roles such as grenadier, squad automatic rifleman, fire team leader, squad leader, operations sergeant, and weapons squad leader. His service earned him two Bronze Star Medals, a Purple Heart, and several other commendations, including the Ranger Tab, Combat Infantryman’s Badge, and Expert Infantryman’s Badge. After his injury, Petry reenlisted and later served as a liaison officer for the United States Special Operations Command Care Coalition, supporting wounded warriors and their families.
Petry is also a public speaker, sharing his experiences on platforms such as the "Late Show with David Letterman." As a decorated combat veteran, he advocates for service members through organizations including Grey Bull Rescue and Mission Six Zero.
