Layshia Clarendon Biography
Layshia Clarendon is a former professional basketball player, labor leader, and social advocate recognized for a 12-year career in the WNBA. Selected ninth overall in the WNBA Draft, Clarendon publicly disclosed a nonbinary and transgender identity after the WNBA's "bubble" season, having previously described themselves as non-cisgender. Clarendon became the first openly trans and nonbinary active WNBA player and the first WNBA player to have top surgery. Throughout their career, Clarendon played for six franchises: the Fever, Dream, Sun, Liberty, Lynx, and Sparks.
During college, Clarendon was the leading scorer for Cal, guiding the Golden Bears to their first Final Four appearance. In the senior season, Clarendon earned All-Pac-12 first-team honors and was named Pac-12 Women's Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year, later being inducted into the Pac-12 Hall of Fame. Clarendon won gold with Team USA at the FIBA World Championships and was named a WNBA All-Star, led the league in total assists, and set the franchise record for assists in a single season with the Atlanta Dream. Over a 12-year WNBA career, Clarendon averaged 7.6 points, 3.2 assists, and 2.7 rebounds per game.
Beyond athletic achievements, Clarendon has been a prominent voice in professional sports advocacy. Elected first vice president of the players association, Clarendon contributed to negotiating the WNBA's collective bargaining agreement, which included higher salaries, improved travel accommodations, and increased support for players with children. Clarendon proposed dedicating the season to the "Say Her Name" campaign and developed initial plans for the "Black Lives Matter" court display. Clarendon also became the founding leader of the league's Social Justice Council, advancing community dialogue, advocacy, and education.
As an anchor athlete for Athletes for Impact, Clarendon launched The Layshia Clarendon Foundation to expand healthcare access for trans and nonbinary individuals. Clarendon has been published in The Players' Tribune, Mic, Esquire, and ESPN. While still active in the WNBA, Clarendon served as a game and studio analyst for Pac-12 Network and has worked as an in-studio analyst for the Golden State Valkyries, as well as a game and in-studio analyst for ESPN, ACC Network, and the Seattle Storm. Drawing on experiences as a professional athlete, labor leader, and advocate for LGBTQIA+ equity, Clarendon speaks with universities, organizations, corporations, and community groups about leadership, identity, mental health, and building inclusive spaces in sports and society.
