Lauren Jackson Biography
Lauren Jackson is recognized as one of the most accomplished Australian basketball players and a leading figure in women's basketball. Jackson began her professional career at the Australian Institute of Sport in the Women's National Basketball League before joining the Canberra Capitals. She later played for the Seattle Storm in the WNBA and represented the Australian national team, the Opals. A seven-time WNBA All-Star and three-time WNBA Most Valuable Player, Jackson was the first non-American and youngest player to win the WNBA MVP Award at age 22.
Jackson was selected as the first overall pick in the WNBA Draft and was identified as a franchise player by the Seattle Storm. Over 12 seasons with the Storm, she contributed to the team's championships and earned Finals MVP honors. Jackson remains the only player born outside the United States to be named WNBA Most Valuable Player. She is one of only three players in WNBA history to win the MVP Award three times, alongside Lisa Leslie and Sheryl Swoopes. Jackson shares the WNBA single-game scoring record with 47 points and holds the record for most field goals in a game with 18. Her international career includes playing for clubs in Europe, Russia, Spain, China, and South Korea, where she was named Women's Korean Basketball League MVP and set a league record with 56 points in a single game.
Jackson is a four-time Olympic medalist, a FIBA World Champion, and a Commonwealth Games gold medalist. In Australia, she won five WNBL Championships with the AIS and Canberra Capitals, was a four-time League and Grand Final MVP, and a five-time WNBL All-Star. She has been named among the league's all-time best players, including selections to the WNBA All-Decade Team, WNBA Top 15 Team, WNBA Top 20@20, and the W25, recognizing the 25 greatest players in WNBA history.
A chronic knee injury led to Jackson's initial retirement, but after new treatment, she returned to play for the Opals, contributing to a bronze medal at the FIBA World Cup and scoring 30 points in the medal match against Canada. Jackson became the first Australian to earn five Olympic medals in basketball, retiring after her final Olympic appearance and subsequent knee surgery.
Jackson has been inducted into the Australian Basketball Hall of Fame, Women's Basketball Hall of Fame, and Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. The sports stadium in Albury was renamed in her honor. She is also a member of the FIBA Hall of Fame and serves as the WNBL's Chief Strategy and Basketball Partnerships Officer, contributing to the growth of basketball in Australia. Jackson's career spans multiple continents and decades, establishing her as a prominent voice in basketball, sports leadership, and athlete resilience.
