Kyle Coon Biography
Kyle Coon lost his sight at the age of six after a battle with Retinoblastoma, cancer of the eye. Determined and passionate about sport, he has never allowed adversity to prevent him from pursuing a life of adventure – a strong message for young adults coming out of college. In 2006, Coon hiked the Ankascocha Trail into Machu Picchu. In 2007, he summited Mt. Kilimanjaro at the age of 15. After graduating from the University of Central Florida with a degree in Communication, he became an endurance athlete competing in marathon and triathlon.
In 2018, Coon was a member of the first team of tandem cyclists with all blind or visually impaired stokers (person on the back of a tandem bike) to complete Race Across America, the world’s toughest bicycle race, racing from Oceanside, CA, to Annapolis, MD, in seven days and 15 hours.
At the 2018 IRONMAN in Arizona, he became the first totally blind person to complete a full distance IRONMAN race (2.4 mi swim, 112 mi bike, 26.2 mi run) in under 11 hours. Coon continues to push himself physically and mentally as he prepares to represent Team USA at the 2020 Paralympics in Tokyo in the sport of Triathlon.
Coon is from Colorado and he currently lives and trains at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. His powerful message resonates with audiences everywhere - that anything is possible with hard work, commitment, and believing in yourself.
