Gwen Jorgensen Biography
Gwen Jorgensen is recognized as a leading athlete in American triathlon. Recruited through USA Triathlon's Collegiate Recruitment Program after competing in track, cross country, and swimming at the University of Wisconsin—where she earned All-America honors and a Big Ten championship—Jorgensen quickly established herself in elite competition. In her first competitive triathlon, she earned elite status with an eighth-place finish and was named USA Triathlon Rookie of the Year in her debut season.
Jorgensen won back-to-back ITU World Triathlon Series titles and achieved 12 consecutive World Triathlon Series victories across two seasons, a record in the sport. She earned 22 World Triathlon Series medals, including 17 gold, the most of any female triathlete. At the Rio Olympics, Jorgensen claimed gold with the fastest 10K split of the day, becoming the first American to win an Olympic gold medal in triathlon.
After her Olympic victory, Jorgensen transitioned to a professional marathon career. Following a heel injury, she returned to elite triathlon competition, winning four World Cup gold medals and a Mixed Relay gold for Team USA in her first season back. She was selected as an alternate for the Paris Olympic team and has continued to compete at the highest level in the World Triathlon Championship Series.
Jorgensen has also contributed to the sport through philanthropy and advocacy. She co-founded the Gwen Jorgensen Scholarship Fund with the USA Triathlon Foundation to increase access to triathlon for underserved youth in the United States. The fund expanded to provide Canyon race bikes for select recipients, supporting the development of young athletes. Jorgensen's career encompasses Olympic gold, record-setting performances, comebacks, and a commitment to advancing triathlon in the United States.
