Victoria Arlen Biography
Victoria Arlen is a Paralympic gold medalist, ESPN television personality, bestselling author, and motivational speaker known for her resilience in the face of significant medical challenges. At age 11, Arlen was diagnosed with two rare neurological disorders, Transverse Myelitis and Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis, which left her in a vegetative state for four years. Despite a prognosis that offered little hope for recovery, Arlen regained the ability to speak, eat, and move, eventually returning to competitive swimming.
Arlen qualified for the London Paralympic Games in four events, winning a gold medal with a world record and three silver medals. She also set multiple world, American, and Pan American records. Following her athletic career, Arlen transitioned to sports broadcasting, joining ESPN as one of its youngest on-air talents. Her roles have included hosting television, international, and Snapchat versions of "SportsCenter," as well as ESPN digital programs such as "SportsNation," "Hoop Streams," "TUF," and "Caps Off." She has also reported for the X Games and Special Olympics.
After nearly a decade in a wheelchair, Arlen learned to walk again and later competed on ABC's "Dancing With the Stars," advancing to the final five. She also served as host of "American Ninja Warrior Jr." on NBC. Arlen's television career spans multiple platforms and networks, highlighting her versatility in sports media and entertainment.
Arlen is the author of "Locked In" and "The View Is Worth It." Her story was also featured in an ESPN 30 for 30 documentary of the same name, which she narrated and produced. Beyond her media work, Arlen is the founder and co-chair of Victoria's Victory Foundation, a nonprofit supporting individuals with mobility challenges. The organization has distributed significant scholarship funds to help recipients achieve personal victories. Arlen continues to share her experiences at speaking engagements for corporations, universities, and professional teams, focusing on topics such as resilience, perseverance, and overcoming adversity.
