John Cleese Biography
John Cleese is a British comic actor and writer known for his deadpan delivery and contributions to British comedy. Cleese began his career with the Cambridge Footlights and gained early recognition at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and as a writer and performer on "The Frost Report." He appeared with Tim Brooke-Taylor, Graham Chapman, and Marty Feldman in the television show "At Last the 1948 Show," collaborating with leading comedy writers of the era, some of whom later joined him in Monty Python.
Cleese starred in and co-wrote "Monty Python's Flying Circus," remaining involved with the group's films after leaving the television series. Alongside Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, Michael Palin, and Graham Chapman, Cleese appeared in the Monty Python films, including "Monty Python and the Holy Grail," "Life of Brian," and "The Meaning of Life." He co-wrote and starred in the sitcom "Fawlty Towers," which is widely regarded as one of British television's greatest comedies. The show topped the British Film Institute's list of the 100 Greatest British Television Programs, and Basil Fawlty was ranked second on Channel 4's list of the 100 Greatest TV Characters.
Cleese co-wrote and starred in "A Fish Called Wanda," earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay and winning a BAFTA for Best Actor. His film credits include "Time Bandits," "Clockwise," and "Rat Race." He appeared in two James Bond films as R and Q, two Harry Potter films as Nearly Headless Nick, and three Shrek films. Cleese received a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for "Cheers" and was nominated for his work on "3rd Rock from the Sun" and "Will & Grace." He has received honors including a BAFTA Fellowship and appointment as Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
Cleese played King Arthur in the West End production of "Monty Python's Spamalot." His creation "Fawlty Towers" has been adapted for the stage, including "Fawlty Towers — The Play," which ran in London's West End and toured the United Kingdom. He also published "Fawlty Towers: Fawlts and All, A 50th Anniversary Celebration," providing insights into the sitcom and its legacy.
