Jessica Berman Biography
Jessica Berman is a sports executive and attorney with a background in professional sports league leadership, labor relations, and sports law. Berman earned a bachelor's degree in sports management from the University of Michigan and a law degree from Fordham University. She began her career as a labor and employment lawyer at Proskauer Rose, where she contributed to the negotiation of a collective bargaining agreement that ended the NHL lockout. Berman later joined the NHL, serving in roles including vice president and deputy general counsel, before moving to the National Lacrosse League as the first woman to hold the title of deputy commissioner for a men's professional sports league.
Berman was appointed commissioner of the National Women's Soccer League, the top professional women's soccer league in the United States. Her hiring process included player interviews, reflecting a shift in league culture following the NWSL abuse scandal. As commissioner, Berman implemented disciplinary actions against individuals identified in a joint league–union report and introduced reforms and programs prioritizing player safety.
During Berman's tenure, the NWSL experienced significant growth in franchise valuations, sales, and partnerships, including the signing of a major media rights deal for a women's sports league. She announced media partnerships for domestic distribution with CBS Sports, ESPN, Prime Video, and Scripps Sports, resulting in increased distribution and revenue. Berman also led the negotiation of a collective bargaining agreement that eliminated the league draft, granting players greater control over their careers. She oversaw the league's expansion to 15 clubs and contributed to record-setting franchise valuations.
Berman's leadership saw a record number of international players joining the NWSL and high participation of NWSL players in the Olympic Games. The league set a new single-game attendance record for a women's professional sporting event in the United States. Berman has been recognized by Sports Business Journal as Best Hire and Executive of the Year, and by Sports Illustrated as Innovator of the Year. The NWSL was also named number five on Fast Company's list of the World's 50 Most Innovative Companies during her tenure.
