Henrik Lundqvist Biography
Henrik Lundqvist is recognized as one of the top goaltenders in National Hockey League history. He played his entire 15-season NHL career with the New York Rangers, becoming a central figure for the franchise and a prominent presence in professional hockey. During the Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy, Lundqvist led the Swedish men's team to their second Olympic gold medal, establishing his reputation as a world-class competitor early in his professional career. While playing in Sweden, he won the Honken Trophy three consecutive seasons before joining the NHL.
Lundqvist is the only goaltender in NHL history to win at least 20 games in 13 consecutive seasons and was the first to win at least 30 games in each of his first seven NHL seasons. He earned the Vezina Trophy as the NHL's Best Goaltender and was a finalist for the Hart Trophy as the league's Most Valuable Player. For seven consecutive seasons, Lundqvist was named the Rangers' Most Valuable Player, setting a franchise record. He established more than 50 single-season and career records with the Rangers. Lundqvist played in Game 7 of a playoff series eight times, winning six—tied for the most Game 7 wins in NHL history—with a 1.11 goals against average and a .961 save percentage.
Lundqvist ranks sixth on the NHL's all-time wins list with 459 and ninth on the all-time appearances list with 887. He holds the record for most wins and most appearances by a goaltender born outside North America. He is the winningest goaltender in New York Rangers franchise history, holds the franchise record for most shutouts, and set the record for most playoff wins. Since the NHL began tracking save percentage, no goaltender has posted a .920 save percentage or better in a season more times than Lundqvist, achieving the mark eight times. Lundqvist was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility.
After developing recurring pericarditis following open-heart surgery, Lundqvist retired from professional hockey on medical advice. He has since become an advocate for health and heart issues, speaking at fundraisers and public events. Lundqvist has discussed his heart condition and retirement on programs such as NBC's TODAY show to raise awareness. The Henrik Lundqvist Foundation supports education and health services for children and adults worldwide. The Rangers retired his number 30, honoring his significant impact on the sport and the city of New York. He also serves as an ambassador for Madison Square Garden.
